Taj was Born 13 March 2004. The second of four children, he was raised in the Wollongong area on the South Coast of NSW. The surrounds are a wave rich area and it wasn’t long before Taj took the lead of his eldest sister Summer, father Mark and began what has become a love of surfing and the ocean. The platter of waves around have allowed Taj to hone a unique style that combines spontaneity and style. Add to this the local reefs and heavy slabs and Taj has become a well rounded surfer at just 14.
Taj is a very likeable person and fits in well in any crowd. He is well respected by his peers at school, in surfing as well as the wider community. Taj is a natural sportsman coming from a family with a variety of sporting backgrounds; and he does well in any sport that he participates in. He played Rugby League at a high standard and represented the South Coast at State Championships for cross country. But Taj’s main focus and passion is surfing. He attends Illawarra Sports High and is part of the Talented Sports and Development Program for Surfing. This program, lengthy trips to Indonesia and his dedication have seen his skill set blossom over the last 18 months. Recent results have been just reward and are hopefully just the start.
Taj is a great young surfer that handles all conditions with confidence. Whether it be small waves or big waves, he can adapt with his variety of turns, power and flow.
Recently Taj reached the semi finals at Surfing NSW State Titles and finished 3rd in the Billabong Oz Grom Cup in Coffs Harbour. He placed 2nd in the Open Mens Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles at Bells Beach, whilst taking out the Junior Division. Taj also had successes in the Woolworths Grom Comp events in 2017, Winning in Cronulla, placing 3rd in Northern Beaches and placing 5th in Kiama. His win in Cronulla giving him the opportunity of attending a Surfing Australia HPC camp along with the other winners from the events. Taj is currently coached by Matt Griggs and Nic Squires. He also receives advice and knowledge from former WCT surfer and neighbour Mick Lowe whose son Samuel is a regular surfing buddy.
Taj’s smooth style has caught the eye of people here and overseas, receiving compliments and accolades wherever he goes. One person of note is former Pipeline Master Robbie Page. Robbie takes Taj under his wing whenever they meet at indigenous competitions across the country and imparts his unique sense of wisdom.
